This marks the conclusion of an iconic period for long-running series, with the production studio revealing a new production schedule for One Piece, which has run continuously for over a quarter-century and featured dozens of non-canon storylines. Starting in January, once the current storyline concludes, the anime will take a quarterly hiatus until spring, when the Elbaph arc begins.
Updated Production Plan
Going forward, One Piece will release a pair of cours every annually for a cap of two dozen installments. Toei states this will enable the anime to “dive even deeper into the core of the universe — incorporating more material, rhythm, and timing of the original manga.” Yet, Toei conclude by hinting at “thrilling developments” during the hiatus period, which means more related projects, such as Netflix's live-action season 2, set to premiere in the interim.
Learning from Past Breaks
The series anime previously took a half-year break that started in October 2024 and ended in April 2025. The intermission was for the animators to improve the animation quality and let the comic to build a lead to avoid a faster anime pace and repetitive summaries. The show couldn't benefit more from this break, and it has managed to deliver viewers with numerous fight scenes, high-quality animation, and reduced non-canon content than previously.
Embracing Seasonal Format
Although a few summary installments appeared during this season, the positive effects of this new production schedule far surpass the occasional interruption in the story. This also gives the manga, which is currently in the middle of the Elbaph arc, to extend its lead on the anime. Per the announcement, this may result in a single installment of the series covering one chapter, with some alternatively covering more material or additional to make up for time.
This concludes of an era for anime, as One Piece is the final major title to abandon the traditional method of production, which focused on airing for almost the entire year. This explains why classics such as Bleach, and naturally One Piece have numerous side stories, and the quality of the art can vary widely between one episode and the following. Nowadays, series creation is organized in cours, with a couple at most coming out each year, enabling better quality and greater accuracy to the source material.
